Makesure’s Business Challenge & Requirements:

Before Makesure’s integration with Affinda, when a check is completed, the process is as follows:

  1. The user first uploads personal identification (ID) documents to Makesure, such as a passport, birth certificate or motor vehicle license  
  1. These ID documents are then scanned and processed by Makesure
  1. Makesure’s team manually checks all of the details on the documents to ensure that the information is correct
  1. The ID documents are then sent to the Australian Government’s Document Verification Service (DVS) for verification

Because of the large volume of checks that Makesure processes annually, they required:

  • A scalable, efficient and dependable custom AI-driven solution
  • A model that improves their Straight-Through-Processing (STP) rate, reducing errors  
  • A reduction in overall processing costs and labour due to manual handling of data
  • A document-agnostic model that allowed the submission of many different identification documents in a range of different formats

Solution:

Initially, Makesure attempted to address their persistent issues with an AI document processing solution. Despite exploring several Affinda alternatives, none of them were able to provide the levels of accuracy Makesure needed, leading them to continue relying on humans-in-the-loop, defeating the purpose of integrating AI with their processes. With this testing, Makesure also realised that their ongoing challenges couldn’t be solved with a standard off-the-shelf solution.  

To address this, Affinda’s AI experts worked with the Makesure team to build tailor-made AI models to meet their specific to their needs.  

The new Document AI model:

  • Increased the accuracy of processing multiple types of identification documents, from regular ID documents such as a passport, birth certificate, motor vehicle license and Medicare card to unique, uncommon ID documents including credit cards, debit cards, Student ID cards, immigration cards and more
  • Removed the need for a human-in-the-loop, drastically improving STP rates and reducing errors caused by the manual handling of data
  • Has >95% accuracy, reducing the labour costs involved by manually checking ID documents
