Andrew Bird

I fret about AI doom - and in my spare time I build the document‑reading AI that keeps your ops alive.

About me

Andrew Bird is Head of AI at Affinda and the architect behind its shift to an agentic, “reads-like-a-human” document processing platform. With an actuarial background (FIAA, CERA), he builds systems that pair large language models with retrieval and memory to deliver straight-through processing for resumes and other complex documents. Andrew helped launch Affinda’s high-accuracy resume parser and its new IDP platform, now used in 50+ languages. His work has been featured by AWS for leading Affinda’s move to a modern generative-AI stack, and he was recently named a finalist for AI Software Engineer of the Year.

My areas of expertise

Agentic IDP systems

Building document processing platforms that combine AI models with tools, memory and supervisors to deliver auditable, enterprise-grade automation.

Production-grade AI engineering

Bridging the gap between fast experiments and robust production systems through proper architecture, testing frameworks, data curation, edge case hunting and evaluation systems – the unglamorous operational work that makes demos trustworthy.

Future-proofing for AI evolution

Designing with flexible interfaces and smart decomposition so platforms stay relevant as models improve rather than getting replaced by them.
